The wine estate’s name means “to chase away the blues” or (more literally) “dispels melancholy”.
Chasse-Spleen is in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation of the Bordeaux region of France, just north-west of Margaux.
It was selected as one of six “Crus Exceptionnels” in the Cru Bourgeois classification of 1932 and retained this ranking until the annulment of the classification in 2007.
“Where, under the sky’s haemorrhage, slowly tossing
In thuds of fever, arch-alcohol of song,
Pumping over the blues in sudden stains,
The bitter redness of love ferment.”
“Drunken Boat” by Arthur Rimbaud (1871), translated by Samuel Beckett (1932)
